Privacy and Data Protection
Who runs this service and why
This service is operated by [Controller name] as the data controller, in the public interest. It exists so families and accredited lawyers can locate a person held in custody and connect them with legal aid, protecting the right to liberty and to legal representation.
Data Protection Officer
For any privacy question or concern, contact our Data Protection Officer at [DPO name and email]. You may also raise a complaint through the form on the Your Data Rights page.
Legal basis
We operate in the public interest and to support the right to liberty and to legal representation under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015. We comply with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and the General Application and Implementation Directive 2025.
What we collect and why
From the requester (you) we collect your full name, your National Identification Number and your phone number, so we can verify your identity, prevent misuse of the service, and protect the person you are searching for. We also record the search terms you enter (name, and optionally NIN or date of birth) so we can find a possible match and so the search is auditable.
What we never show
We never show charges, case numbers, sentence, or any legal detail about the person you are searching for. Everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court, and legal detail belongs with the person's lawyer, not on a public portal.
Retention
Verification records are kept for 12 months to prevent abuse of the service and are then deleted, unless the law requires us to keep them longer. A person's custody record is removed from public results as soon as they are released or acquitted.
Where your data is stored
Personal data is stored on infrastructure located within Nigeria. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
Your rights
You may ask to access, correct, delete or object to the use of your personal data at any time. You may also raise a complaint with us or with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission. Use the Your Data Rights page to submit a request.
About NIN checks
National Identification Number checks follow the rules of the National Identity Management Commission and are carried out only with your consent as part of the verification step. Your NIN is never shown to another user of the portal.
